How a Cookie Became a Catalyst for Change
Hi, my name is Erica, and A Human with a Heart began with a simple yet powerful moment in 2021.
One morning, after my usual post-workout shower, I listened to the news as I always do. But that day, one story pierced through the noise: a severe drought in southern Madagascar, the worst in 40 years. People were walking for hours for water, digging in the dirt for roots to eat. The pain in their eyes stayed with me.
I had to act.
I found a way to donate meals and shared the experience with my kids. Together, we chose an amount and clicked the donate button. It felt good—but also like a drop in the ocean.
Turning Pain into Purpose
Weeks later, my eldest son came home, excited about his school’s TED-style talk competition. He wanted to speak about hunger and the power of small actions. He worked hard, delivering his speech first to classmates, then his year group, and finally the entire school.
His impact was real. His voice had reached hundreds of people, proving that one person can make a difference.
Then, the holiday season arrived. A Ukrainian friend, Masha, taught me to bake traditional Christmas cookies. I became obsessed, filling my kitchen with cookies. Friends and neighbors loved them, saying, “You should sell these!”
At first, I dismissed the idea—I had once built a promising corporate career, and I didn’t see myself as a cookie seller.
But then, that familiar ache in my heart spoke again:
"You could feed more people if you sold these cookies."
The Cookie That Fed 795 People
With a leap of faith, I sent an invitation for a charity cookie tasting to my neighbors. To my joy, the house filled with people who wanted to support the cause. Orders poured in—some bought cookies as gifts, some for colleagues, others sent them abroad.
When it was all over, I did the math: I had baked and decorated 795 cookies in two weeks, enough to donate exactly 795 meals. This wasn’t by design—the perfect match of cookies to meals felt like a sign. I shared the news with everyone who supported the cause, and their joy mirrored mine. No longer did I feel like a drop in the ocean. Instead, I saw the ocean within each drop.
